Oak Wood Wood Products From Antique To Modern

Oak wood has been valuable for hundreds of years. When old growth lumber was more easily available it was valued for it strength. As the finer hardwoods were used up it come into it's own as a furniture wood.

The Craftsman movement of the early 1900's was based on quater sawn "Fumed Oak". Quarter sawn lunber displays the grain of the wood in a very striking way. Fuming, which means exposing the wood to amonia fumes, darkens the oak and brings out the grain.

As prices rose and quality oak became harder to find, oak veneers and other resource reducing techniques became popular. However, oak in all it's forms, is still the wood of choice for many.
